Rachida
Let me take a deep breath first...
Rachida
Directed by Yamina Bachir-Chouikh
Featuring Ibtissem Djouadi and Bahia Rachedi
Algeria, 2002, 100 minutes
Arabic and French with English subtitles
Rachida is confident, young, elementary school teacher in Algeria. On her way to work one morning, she is stopped by a group of extremists who want her to take a bomb into the school where she teaches. She refuses. The events that unfold following her courageous refusal reveal the tragic consequences of the recent conflict in Algeria for ordinary people, especially women. This award-winning film presents an unflinching look at violence and offers hopeful glimpses of a different future.
Just came from the second movie of the Film Week at KU, Rachida. (I wrote this yesterday December 3rd, but posted it today)
I can say that I spent almost the entire time watching the movie with my hand over my mouth!
It’s so, so moving! So shocking! Wether it’s real or not, and I guess it was real for some period of time, perhaps during the nineties.
The last scene of the film, showing the children go back to school even after it was destroyed. It moved me so much! I mean the children are the future of every nation, and it’s so obvious that sometimes people sorta forget this fact!
Algeria was devastated by the terror spread all over the country, even in the smallest of villages. Despite all the confusion, you can see the innocence of the little children in the movie. One boy’s aunt was kidnapped by the terrorists and was raped. She managed to escape and return to the village, but she wasn’t welcomed back home. Her nephew however saw that she was innocent. That is innocence!
However, the boys at school bullied him just for being her nephew. Even though the teacher - Rachida - stopped them, I think she should’ve at least warned them from bullying each other, or despising someone for something that is not his fault. I mean thats the essence of terrorism! Isn’t it? Hatred.
So, when Rachida writes on the board: “Today’s Lesson”
I guess that should’ve been the lesson to the children, to love one another, to have sympathy for one another, to help one another. I guess thats what I came out with..

So when does the film week finish? I would love to watch the films. Will there be a movie on Wednesday?
And where is the location?
Thanks!
Hello there! :)
Yes there is a movie on wed, and its called 'Bits and Pieces' from Lebanon!
the event - Film Week - takes place from 2-6 December, 7 pm. Abdullah Al-Otaibi Bldg., Basement.
Kaifan Campus, Kuwait University.
(copied it from the brochure :P)
there is an open discussion after each screening.
and btw the campus looks a bit scary at night, but its worth it! :)
Thanks for your comments :) *wide grin*
hmmm, that's weird. I wrote a comment but now I'm not sure it was saved successfully! (of course it doesn't help that I am half asleep:P) tell me if you didn't get it, so I'll post it again:)
but if you do have it, just ignore this one and don't publish it:) hehe
Hello Ivory,
I'm Mariam's sister. I just want to say that I too am enjoying reading your movie reviews. I also want to thank you for not being intimdated by the, ummm, crazy sisterly conversations that take place on my sister's blog. Lastly, I'm not as crazy as I seem :) Honestly!
Hey, here's a thought, why don't you two meet on Wednesday at the movie if you're both going?
Hello Maryam :)
nope, i dnt think i got ur comment, or maybe i did but i dnt know which one ur talking about :P
and Hello Dalia, pleased to have your acquaintance :)
hmm.. thats interesting indeed!
How do you look like Maryam?? :)
Hey Ivory:) (I'm sorry dalia I will ignore you, I don't think we should do any crazy babbling in other people's blogs:)
Yep, you didn't get my comment. Oh well! I forgot what it was:)hehe
I think I asked if I'd be able to get on campus even though I'm not a student?
I sure hope so cuz I'm looking forward to watching it:)
How do I look like? hehe Let me think.. The easiest way for you to spot me would be for me to show up in my rainbow colored pajamas, but I don't think that's advisable:P
hmm.. okay I got it. You can guess me from my Hijab. I don't wear the "shaila", I wear the syrian kind of Hijab, called "Amira" (yep, that's the closest I could get to being an actual princess! Sad I know:P) it's cottony and made out of two peices. You can google it to see how it looks like:)
I'm not sure what I'll be wearing, but I guess it's safe to assume it'll be beige or blue:)
Well, that is one long comment! I must go now. Hope I'll get to meet you:)
thanks for the info!:)
Oh my dad just told me he'd like to come watch the movie with me!
That'll make it even easier to find me, "princess wanna-be with her daddy":P
See ya!
Hey MarYam! :)
guess i saw you! were you wearing pink?? with a beige small bag? was that you? coz i sorta stared a lot :P
